Address and Personal Information Changes
California drivers and ID-card holders must keep DMV records current. A new address must be reported within 10 days, but the update does not automatically produce a new card. A legal name, gender category, or other personal-information change generally requires a new DL/ID application and an office visit. Vehicle-registration records may also need a separate update, so completing one screen should never be assumed to change every DMV record.

Replacement and Renewal
Replacement provides another card when a current credential is lost, stolen, damaged, or needs an updated address; it ordinarily does not extend the expiration date. Renewal extends the credential after the holder completes the applicable requirements. An expired driver license does not authorize driving. An application receipt is not automatically a temporary license, and an old card becomes invalid once its replacement arrives. Choose the transaction by checking the problem, expiration date, eligibility, required documents, and actual driving authority while the new card is delivered.

Out-of-State License Extensions
A qualified California driver who is temporarily outside the state and cannot renew may request a one-year extension before the license expires. Limited-term licenses do not qualify for that general extension. Active-duty U.S. Armed Forces or Foreign Service personnel and qualifying spouses use separate DL 236 rules. An extension does not repair a suspension, guarantee recognition elsewhere, replace renewal after return, or serve a person who has permanently moved to another state or jurisdiction and established a new residence.
