California DMV uses vision screening to determine whether an applicant can see well enough to drive safely and a knowledge test to assess understanding of traffic laws and safe-driving rules. Corrective lenses may become a license restriction, and applicants who do not meet the initial vision standard may need a DL 62 examination. Original applicants must pass the applicable knowledge test; renewal-only eLearning is not a shortcut for a first license.

California’s noncommercial Class C behind-the-wheel test has a pre-drive safety check and a Driving Performance Evaluation with a DMV examiner. The examiner scores observation, speed, spacing, lane position, signals, yielding, control, and response to traffic. Ordinary errors accumulate, while a critical driving error causes failure. Successful preparation builds repeatable habits rather than memorizing a test route or performing special behavior only for the examiner.

Before California’s Class C road test, the examiner checks whether the vehicle meets minimum safety requirements and whether the applicant can identify or operate essential controls. Certain mechanical failures cause the test to be rescheduled, while inability to locate or demonstrate four or more specified controls produces an unsatisfactory result. A deliberate inspection before leaving home prevents avoidable failure and supports safe everyday driving throughout the life of the vehicle, every day.
