Insurance and Financial Responsibility
California drivers and vehicle owners must demonstrate financial responsibility. Standard liability insurance minimums are $30,000 for one person’s injury or death, $60,000 for multiple people, and $15,000 for property damage. Carry proof when driving, during a drive test, and after a collision. Missing insurance information can suspend registration; an uninsured collision can affect driving privileges regardless of fault. Distinguish liability coverage from collision and comprehensive coverage, and check the policy, covered vehicle, proof, and DMV status before travel.

Collision Response
A collision scene may expose people to a second crash. Stop, assess injuries and traffic, and call 911 if anyone is hurt. When no one is hurt, move operable vehicles out of traffic when safe. Exchange license, registration, insurance, and current-address details. Parked property and injured animals require different responses. This lesson explains the immediate STOP–CARE–CLEAR–EXCHANGE sequence and how to record facts without delaying help. The separate reporting lesson covers law-enforcement and DMV deadlines.

Collision Reporting
Scene safety and reporting are separate tasks after a California collision. Injury or death requires a law-enforcement report within 24 hours. An SR 1 goes to DMV within 10 days when anyone is hurt or killed, or property damage exceeds $1,000. Police and insurance reports do not replace it, and fault does not remove the duty. Private-property incidents can qualify; a narrow own-property, no-injury off-highway exception exists. This lesson organizes recipients, thresholds, documents, and proof of submission.
