Virginia CDL Virginia Transfer, Renewal, Replacement, and Credential Delivery

A new Virginia resident who holds a CDL must obtain the Virginia CDL within 30 days. The applicant supplies the current out-of-state credential and the Virginia identity, residence, Social Security, legal-presence, federal eligibility, and medical records that apply.

Virginia does not simply transfer H from another state. The applicant passes Virginia's H knowledge exam and must have verifiable current TSA eligibility or complete Virginia's fingerprint-based process.

A standard Virginia CDL is generally valid for eight years and expires on the holder's birthday. Registry-related credentials are issued for five years, and medical or TSA authority may expire earlier than the plastic card.

Virginia permits eligible holders to renew as early as one year before expiration. Limited-duration holders, H or X holders, people without acceptable legal-presence evidence, registry members, suspended or revoked drivers, and credentials expired over one year are among those who cannot use ordinary online renewal.

After approval, Virginia mails the CDL or CLP and does not allow pickup. USPS will not forward the credential, so the address on the DMV record must be correct before issuance.
