Virginia CDL Endorsements and State Restriction Codes

Virginia uses H for hazardous materials, N for tank vehicles, P for passenger vehicles, S for school buses, T for doubles or triples, and X for tank plus hazardous materials. An endorsement supplements the correct Class A, B, or C credential and never replaces it.

Only N, P, and S may be added to a CLP. N automatically carries X, prohibiting cargo in the tank and requiring an empty, purged training vehicle. P and S automatically carry P, prohibiting ordinary passenger carriage except the limited people allowed during supervised training or examination.

Virginia restrictions E, L, M, N, O, P, X, and Z reflect the transmission, brake system, passenger group, coupling, learner role, or tank condition demonstrated. Testing in equipment narrower than the planned job can restrict the issued credential.

Virginia also publishes I for specified government-owned CMVs with medical-document conditions, J for school or activity bus only, and Q prohibiting transport of children to or from school or licensed daycare activities. B and C identify corrective-lens conditions, while V requires medical variance documentation.

When DMV cancels an endorsement, the holder must appear for a replacement credential without that endorsement or with the proper restriction. Failure to complete that correction may cause cancellation of the CDL or CLP itself.
