Texas CDL Vehicle Inspection Test Rules and Automatic Failures

Texas uses the applicable vehicle-inspection material together with the DL-7CM modernized supplement. Study the checklist for the actual vehicle class and brake system. Older pre-trip videos can contain different sequences, scoring, or exercises.

Point to or touch the item when instructed, name it, describe what you inspect, and explain why the condition matters. Use clear phrases such as securely mounted, not damaged or leaking, and operating correctly, but connect each phrase to the actual component.

Passenger, school-bus, and combination vehicles have additional inspection items. The examiner assigns the applicable path. Inspect only from memory after learning which doors, emergency equipment, couplings, brake controls, and cargo or passenger features belong to that vehicle.

Follow the prescribed air-brake or hydraulic-brake sequence exactly, secure the vehicle, and state gauge behavior and warning response. Skipping a required safety step, allowing movement, or accepting an unsafe brake result can end the test.

Dangerous action, loss of control, collision, examiner intervention, failure to obey safety instructions, or an unsafe vehicle can terminate testing. Treat wheel chocking, parking-brake position, transmission selection, and surroundings as active safety decisions.

Inspect the same vehicle used for practice, learn its controls, and use the current Texas checklist. Speak loudly enough for the examiner, complete each assigned area methodically, and do not invent a defect. If uncertain about an instruction, ask before performing an unsafe action.
