Texas CDL Endorsements

A CDL class establishes the vehicle group a driver may operate. An endorsement adds authority for a specialized vehicle or cargo that requires additional knowledge or skills. Determine the base class first, then identify every endorsement required by the vehicle configuration, passenger use, tank capacity, and hazardous-material status.

A Class A driver who will pull double or triple trailers needs the T endorsement and must pass the specialized knowledge test. The material covers coupling, inspection, stability, braking, and the additional risks created by multiple articulation points. The endorsement does not replace the underlying Class A qualification.

The N endorsement applies to a CMV designed to carry liquid or gaseous material in attached tanks when an individual tank exceeds 119 gallons and the aggregate rated capacity is 1,000 gallons or more. When the tank carries hazardous material in a quantity requiring placards, the driver needs the combined X endorsement and must satisfy both tank and hazardous-material requirements.

A driver operating a vehicle designed for 16 or more people, including the driver, needs the P endorsement and must pass the passenger knowledge test and skills test in an appropriate passenger vehicle. School-bus operation additionally requires the S endorsement, the school-bus knowledge test, and a school-bus skills test. Testing in a vehicle with limited equipment or capacity can produce restrictions.

The H endorsement is required to transport material designated hazardous and requiring placards under 49 CFR Part 172, Subpart F, or covered select agents or toxins. The driver must pass the HazMat knowledge examination and complete the required TSA security threat assessment. The endorsement is not issued merely because the driver holds Class A or operates a large truck.

Only P, S, and N endorsements may be placed on a commercial learner permit under the handbook framework. Build a test plan from the intended vehicle: general knowledge for every applicant, combination knowledge for combination vehicles, air-brake knowledge when applicable, and the specialized endorsement tests. Skills testing must use a representative vehicle and is completed in the required sequence: vehicle inspection, basic vehicle control, and on-road driving.

List the actual vehicle and work assignment. Check trailer count, tank design and rated capacity, placarding status, passenger design capacity, and school-bus use. Match every condition to its endorsement, then separately review restrictions created by the test vehicle. Verify current Texas DPS requirements before applying because security, medical, and testing procedures can change.

The March 2026 DL-7C confirms that HazMat background-check requirements apply to both new applications and renewals. The endorsement and restriction codes remain separate from the underlying vehicle-class requirements.
