Texas CDL Air and Hydraulic Brake Checks

Begin on suitable ground with the transmission, parking brakes, wheel restraints, and engine state set exactly as the current test step requires. Know which portions require brakes applied or released. Never rely on memory from a different vehicle configuration.

Identify both gauges where fitted, confirm pressure buildup and governor behavior, and test static and applied leakage using the current single- or combination-vehicle limit. Use a timer. An unexplained pressure loss, abnormal gauge difference, or failure to build pressure is unsafe.

Reduce pressure in the prescribed manner and verify the warning activates before unsafe pressure. Continue according to the Texas test sequence to confirm spring-brake or protection response. Keep the vehicle secured throughout the test.

Pump the pedal as instructed, hold firm pressure, and check for pedal movement that indicates a leak. Verify warning indicators and, where applicable, hydraulic reserve or electric assist. Inspect for fluid leaks and damaged lines before moving.

Test the parking brake against gentle power only in the approved manner. Then move slowly and apply the service brake, checking that the vehicle stops promptly without pulling, delay, vibration, or unusual sound. Stop testing if movement becomes unsafe.

The examiner must hear what was checked and whether the result passed. State the gauge, warning, control, or vehicle response rather than saying only “good.” Learn current numerical limits from the official Texas test material before the appointment.
