Tennessee CDL Tennessee CLP Application, Transfer, and Supervision

Bring the Tennessee license or ID, or a valid out-of-state license or CDL; a current DOT medical qualification when required; proof of Social Security number; two proofs of Tennessee residence; and proof of U.S. citizenship or lawful permanent resident status. A Tennessee CLP is valid for 365 days and must be held for at least 14 days before the skills test. If the holder does not convert the permit to a CDL before expiration, the manual states that the knowledge and skills results become null and void.

During public-road practice, a properly licensed CDL holder of the same or higher class with all required endorsements must occupy the front seat. Practice must remain within the CLP class, endorsements, P or X learner restrictions, and medical authority.

An out-of-state transfer requires Tennessee domicile and identity verification, medical self-certification, and validation of existing commercial authority. A new class, skills-test-dependent endorsement, or equipment-restriction removal requires the prescribed knowledge, permit, ELDT, and representative-vehicle testing. Tennessee does not issue a non-domiciled CDL.
