Tennessee CDL Knowledge Tests, Skills Tests, Fees, and Retesting

Applicants take General Knowledge plus every air-brake, combination, and endorsement module required for the requested credential. A failed knowledge test may be retaken the next day; cheating follows a separate manager-directed retest restriction. The practice system uses the federal 80 percent minimum while clearly treating blueprint distributions as internal study settings.

The current Tennessee fee page lists an eight-year Class A CDL total of $70 and Class B or C total of $62. A one-year Class A learner permit totals $14; Class B or C learner permit totals $13. Ordinary N, P, H, or T endorsement transactions total $8.50, while S totals $26, before any separately listed partner or TSA charge.

After at least 14 days and required ELDT, testing proceeds through Vehicle Inspection, Basic Vehicle Control, and On-Road Driving. A Tennessee state-center appointment requires the applicant to provide a safe, representative CMV; the complete process may take about two hours. Third-party organizations schedule separately and may charge additional fees.

The class, endorsements, and restrictions come from the vehicle actually used. The VIN and manufacturer GVWR must be identifiable; a Class A tractor cannot test bobtail; cargo containers and tanks must be empty; a HazMat tank needs written purge proof; and marked inspection components are prohibited.
