Tennessee CDL Tennessee 2005-System CDL Skills Test Overview

The current official TDOSHS PDF retains the 2005 CDL Testing System. Its Vehicle Inspection is a full component-identification and explanation test, and its Basic Vehicle Control section uses legacy backing and parking exercises rather than the modernized four-exercise format used by some states.

Identify, point to or touch, and explain the condition of required components across the cab, engine area, axles, brakes, wheels, body, coupling system, and trailer. Marked or labeled components are prohibited, and an unsafe test vehicle cannot proceed.

The manual lists straight-line backing, offset back/right, offset back/left, driver-side parallel parking, conventional parallel parking, and alley dock. The examiner selects the required exercises and scores encroachments, pull-ups, outside looks, and final position under the stated exercise rules.

The road test evaluates turns, intersections, urban and rural operation, expressways where available, stopping, lane use, curves, railroad crossings, bridges or overpasses, traffic checks, signaling, speed, shifting, and safe control. Examiner directions never authorize an unsafe act.
