Prepare the bus
Before the crossing, check mirrors and traffic, activate hazard warnings as required, reduce noise, silence students, turn off distracting equipment, and prepare to stop. Do not begin the sequence too late for following traffic to react.
Stop at the lawful position
Stop within the current legally required distance and lane position without placing any part of the bus on the tracks. Set controls as required and open the door or window when the procedure calls for it to improve hearing and sight.
Look and listen
Check left, right, and left again across every track. Signals can fail, and a second train may be hidden by the first. Do not proceed until the view, sound, signals, and available clearing space all support a safe crossing.
Clearance beyond the tracks
Never enter unless the entire bus can clear every rail without stopping. Account for traffic lights, queues, multiple tracks, bus length, and low-ground-clearance risk. Wait before the first rail when the far side is blocked.
Cross in the proper gear
Select a gear before entering and do not shift on the tracks. Close the door or window as required, scan again, cross steadily, and continue until the rear clears. Restore warning and traffic controls only after the crossing is complete.
Exceptions require exact knowledge
Some crossings may be exempt or controlled under stated conditions. Use the current official rule; do not infer an exception from inactive signals, light rail appearance, or another bus proceeding.
Scenario
Signals are inactive, but traffic blocks the far side. The driver completes the required stop yet remains before the tracks until a full bus-length space opens. The absence of a train does not remove the clearing requirement.
