CDL Study Guide • FMCSA ELDT Theory Preparation • DMV Written Knowledge Exam
Understand ABS behavior, warning lamps, crossing arms, stop signals, interlocks, and restraint equipment.

This commercial driver study guide covers relevant Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) concepts and California commercial driver knowledge topics. Review the regulations, procedures, and safety checklists below as part of your CDL and commercial learner permit (CLP) preparation.

01

ABS purpose

ABS helps prevent wheel lock and preserve steering during hard braking. It does not create traction, shorten every stop, or replace safe speed and following distance. Use firm controlled pressure and do not pump solely because ABS activates.

ABS warning lamp

Observe the startup self-check. A lamp that stays on or returns indicates a fault. Foundation brakes may still work, but anti-lock protection may be unavailable. Report the defect and follow inspection or out-of-service requirements.

Stop arm and warning lamps

Inspect amber/red warning lamps, stop arm, switches, indicators, and sequencing. Know when each is activated under current law and procedure. Equipment warns traffic but cannot guarantee motorists will stop.

Crossing-control arm and mirrors

Check full extension and retraction, secure mounting, and visibility. Confirm mirror adjustment covers the front danger zone and arm area. A failed arm or mirror requires action before service under applicable rules.

Door and brake interlocks

Some buses connect doors, warning systems, brakes, or lifts through interlocks. Test them as designed and never bypass a failed interlock. An interlock supports a safe sequence but does not replace the driver’s brake and mirror checks.

06

Passenger restraints

Inspect installed seat belts, child restraint anchorages, wheelchair securement, occupant belts, and seat condition. Use each system according to its design and the student’s plan; do not substitute cargo straps or improvised attachments.

Scenario

The stop arm extends, but one red warning lamp fails. The driver reports the defect and follows the required service decision rather than assuming the arm alone provides adequate warning.

Commercial Driver License Exam Readiness: Achieving a passing grade of 80% or higher on state DMV commercial driver knowledge exams requires mastery of federal vehicle inspection procedures, gross vehicle weight ratings (GVWR / GCWR), braking mechanics, and road safety regulations.
