CDL Study Guide β€’ FMCSA ELDT Theory Preparation β€’ DMV Written Knowledge Exam
Prepare the correct vehicle, documents, controls, communication, and safe test-day mindset.

This commercial driver study guide covers relevant Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) concepts and California commercial driver knowledge topics. Review the regulations, procedures, and safety checklists below as part of your CDL and commercial learner permit (CLP) preparation.

Correct test vehicle

Bring the class, configuration, transmission, brake system, coupling, passenger capacity, and endorsements needed for the desired credential. An easier vehicle can create restrictions. Verify registration, insurance, inspection status, and required accompanying-driver authority.

02

Know the controls

Before movement, locate lights, signals, hazards, horn, wipers, defroster, parking and service brakes, transmission ranges, mirrors, door controls, and emergency equipment. Ask for clarification before the test begins, not while entering traffic.

Driver setup

Adjust seat and mirrors, fasten the belt, secure doors, confirm neutral or proper starting gear, release only intended brakes, and scan the full area. Use three points of contact entering and exiting.

Follow lawful examiner directions

Listen fully, repeat directions if needed, and make only safe legal maneuvers. If a turn cannot be completed safely, continue and tell the examiner rather than making an abrupt illegal correction.

05

Narration versus observation

Use visible head and mirror movement so observations can be evaluated, but do not exaggerate or stare. Driving control remains primary. Follow current examiner instructions about verbalization.

06

Manage test pressure

Breathe, scan, and perform one decision at a time. A missed direction is not permission for sudden braking, backing, or cutting across lanes. Safe recovery demonstrates better judgment than forcing the route.

Scenario

The examiner requests a right turn after the truck has passed the safe lane-change point. The applicant continues straight and requests a new direction instead of crossing lanes abruptly.

Commercial Driver License Exam Readiness: Achieving a passing grade of 80% or higher on state DMV commercial driver knowledge exams requires mastery of federal vehicle inspection procedures, gross vehicle weight ratings (GVWR / GCWR), braking mechanics, and road safety regulations.
