CDL Study Guide β€’ FMCSA ELDT Theory Preparation β€’ DMV Written Knowledge Exam
Approach, scan, stop, select lanes, control offtracking, and complete turns safely.

This commercial driver study guide covers relevant Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) concepts and California commercial driver knowledge topics. Review the regulations, procedures, and safety checklists below as part of your CDL and commercial learner permit (CLP) preparation.

Approach early

Scan signs, signals, crosswalks, lanes, traffic, pedestrians, cyclists, clearance, and escape space. Release the accelerator early, check mirrors, and choose a speed and gear that avoid harsh braking.

Complete stops

Stop before the required line, crosswalk, or intersection without rolling. Keep the vehicle out of pedestrian space and maintain enough room to see. If visibility is blocked, make a separate cautious observation movement only after the legal stop.

03

Scan pattern

Look left, right, and left again while checking mirrors and immediate hazards. Continue scanning through the turn. A green signal or right-of-way does not prove the intersection is clear.

Right turns

Signal early, position correctly, protect the right side from bicycles and pedestrians, and turn wide enough for offtracking without swinging left unnecessarily. Watch the right mirror until rear wheels and tail clear.

Left turns

Enter from and finish in the correct lane unless signs or vehicle needs lawfully require otherwise. Yield, control speed, avoid cutting the corner, and monitor tail swing and opposing traffic.

06

Do not shift in the turn

Select the needed gear before entry and maintain control through the intersection. Coasting, missed shifts, or steering one-handed for an extended gear search can reduce control.

Scenario

A cyclist approaches on the right as the truck prepares to turn. The applicant remains stopped, maintains the signal, tracks the cyclist in mirrors, and turns only after the danger area clears.

Commercial Driver License Exam Readiness: Achieving a passing grade of 80% or higher on state DMV commercial driver knowledge exams requires mastery of federal vehicle inspection procedures, gross vehicle weight ratings (GVWR / GCWR), braking mechanics, and road safety regulations.
