Passenger compartment
Inspect aisles, steps, handrails, floor coverings, seats, seat mountings, overhead storage, stanchions, windows, and interior lighting. Keep aisles and exits clear. Loose seats, torn flooring, sharp edges, or unsecured baggage can injure passengers during normal movement or an emergency.
Doors and exits
Check entrance and exit doors, emergency doors, windows, roof hatches, release handles, warning buzzers, markings, and instructions. Exits must open, close, latch, and signal correctly without being blocked by cargo, seats, or decorative material.
Emergency equipment
Verify required fire extinguisher, warning devices, first-aid or body-fluid equipment when applicable, spare fuses or circuit protection, and emergency communication equipment. Know locations before passengers board and keep access unobstructed.
Driver controls and visibility
Check mirrors, windshield, wipers, washers, defrosters, horn, steering, brakes, warning lamps, door controls, public-address system, and dashboard indicators. Adjust mirrors before movement so passenger doors, vehicle sides, rear traffic, and relevant danger areas can be monitored.
Accessibility equipment
Inspect lifts, ramps, interlocks, barriers, securement points, belts, and warning devices according to vehicle instructions. Do not operate with a failed safety interlock or improvised securement. Keep the lift area clear and protect passengers from pinch and fall hazards.
Exterior and mechanical inspection
Complete the normal engine, brake, tire, wheel, suspension, steering, light, fuel, exhaust, and body inspection. Passenger safety equipment does not replace a full commercial-vehicle inspection. Exhaust leaks deserve special attention because fumes can enter occupied areas.
Scenario
The emergency-exit buzzer works, but a cleaning cart blocks the rear door. The driver removes and secures the cart before boarding. A functioning exit mechanism is not usable when the path is blocked.
