Choose a safe stop
Stop where passengers can board from a protected area when possible. Avoid locations with poor visibility, unstable footing, traffic exposure, overhead hazards, or insufficient clearance. Secure the vehicle before opening doors and monitor surrounding traffic.
Boarding sequence
Open doors only after a complete stop. Watch mirrors and doorway areas, assist according to policy, control the number of boarding passengers, and prevent rushing. Close and verify doors before releasing brakes. Never move while a passenger is in the doorway or lift area.
Passenger count and capacity
Know seating and standing capacity and applicable restrictions. Do not exceed rated or legal capacity. Distribute passengers to preserve visibility and axle balance, and do not allow anyone to occupy prohibited areas or interfere with controls.
Baggage and carry-ons
Secure baggage so it cannot block aisles or exits, strike passengers, shift vehicle balance, or interfere with the driver. Prohibit hazardous or incompatible articles as required. Never place heavy items where normal braking can launch them forward.
Communicate before movement
Explain safety rules, stops, seat-belt use where equipped, prohibited behavior, and emergency-exit information as required. Confirm passengers needing assistance are secure and that attendants understand their role.
Smooth trip start
Check mirrors, signal, close doors, confirm clearance, release brakes, and accelerate smoothly. Passenger vehicles require especially gentle starts and stops because standing, elderly, injured, or mobility-limited passengers can fall.

A passenger runs toward the bus after the door closes. The driver remains stopped, rechecks all mirrors and traffic, and reopens only when safe. The driver never begins moving and then stops abruptly to accommodate late boarding.
