CDL Study Guide β€’ FMCSA ELDT Theory Preparation β€’ DMV Written Knowledge Exam
Inspect doors, exits, seating, aisles, lifts, stop equipment, mirrors, and student/passenger safety systems.

This commercial driver study guide covers relevant Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) concepts and California commercial driver knowledge topics. Review the regulations, procedures, and safety checklists below as part of your CDL and commercial learner permit (CLP) preparation.

Doors and steps

Inspect entrance and exit doors, hinges, seals, latches, controls, warning devices, steps, handrails, and lighting. Doors must operate and secure correctly; steps must be clear and non-slip.

Emergency exits

Open and close required emergency doors, windows, roof hatches, and side exits as directed. Check markings, instructions, buzzers, handles, seals, and unobstructed paths. Never accept luggage or equipment blocking an exit.

03

Seats and aisles

Check seat frames, cushions, mountings, belts where installed, stanchions, overhead storage, floor covering, and aisle clearance. Loose seating or objects can become projectiles or evacuation barriers.

Accessibility equipment

Inspect lift/ramp condition, controls, interlocks, barriers, warning devices, wheelchair anchorages, and occupant restraints. Demonstrate only under safe examiner direction and never bypass a failed interlock.

School-bus warning systems

Check amber/red warning lamps, stop arm, crossing-control arm, indicators, mirrors, student lights, and emergency equipment. Confirm correct sequence and full deployment without assuming motorists will obey.

06

Passenger-area hazards

Look for sharp edges, broken glass, exhaust entry, loose panels, damaged heaters, unsecured baggage, and contaminated floors. Explain how each defect can harm passengers, not merely that it β€œlooks bad.”

Scenario

The rear emergency door opens, but its buzzer is silent. The applicant identifies the warning-device failure and does not describe the exit as fully operational.

Commercial Driver License Exam Readiness: Achieving a passing grade of 80% or higher on state DMV commercial driver knowledge exams requires mastery of federal vehicle inspection procedures, gross vehicle weight ratings (GVWR / GCWR), braking mechanics, and road safety regulations.
