CDL Study Guide β€’ FMCSA ELDT Theory Preparation β€’ DMV Written Knowledge Exam
Clear the vehicle, find sleeping or disabled passengers, secure equipment, report defects, and protect property.

This commercial driver study guide covers relevant Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) concepts and California commercial driver knowledge topics. Review the regulations, procedures, and safety checklists below as part of your CDL and commercial learner permit (CLP) preparation.

Walk the entire vehicle

After the route, physically inspect every row, floor area, restroom if equipped, luggage space, wheelchair area, and space beneath or behind seats. Look for sleeping, ill, injured, disabled, or hidden passengers and never rely only on a mirror glance.

Children and vulnerable passengers

Use the required child-check or passenger-check system. If anyone remains aboard, follow safeguarding and notification procedures immediately. Extreme temperature can make even a short delay life-threatening.

Property and suspicious items

Handle ordinary lost property under company policy. Do not touch a suspicious package, weapon, leaking container, or unknown substance. Isolate the vehicle and contact qualified personnel or emergency services as appropriate.

Vehicle condition

Check seats, exits, windows, doors, interior damage, fluids, tires, lights, body damage, emergency equipment, cleanliness, and signs of vandalism or mechanical defects that appeared during the trip.

05

Report and secure

Record required defects, passenger incidents, property, mileage, fuel, and cleaning needs. Park in the assigned location, set brakes, chock when required, close windows and doors, secure keys, and protect documents.

06

Do not defer safety defects

A defect discovered after the route is still a pre-trip defect for the next driver. Tag and report it through the maintenance system rather than assuming the next shift will notice.

Scenario

The bus appears empty, but the walk-through finds a sleeping passenger behind the rear seats. The driver keeps the person safe, contacts dispatch, and follows the required release process rather than leaving the vehicle unattended.

Commercial Driver License Exam Readiness: Achieving a passing grade of 80% or higher on state DMV commercial driver knowledge exams requires mastery of federal vehicle inspection procedures, gross vehicle weight ratings (GVWR / GCWR), braking mechanics, and road safety regulations.
