This commercial driver study guide covers relevant Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) concepts and Pennsylvania commercial driver knowledge topics. Review the regulations, procedures, and safety checklists below as part of your CDL and commercial learner permit (CLP) preparation.
Know what is scored
Pennsylvania scores direction changes used for better position, boundary or cone encroachments, permitted outside looks, and final position as described for each exercise. The four exercises are forward stop, straight-line backing, forward offset tracking, and reverse offset backing. Examiner instructions control the exact course.
Secure every outside look
Before leaving the seated driving position, set the parking brake and place the transmission in neutral or park. Exit and enter facing the vehicle with three points of contact; a bus driver may face forward while firmly using the handrail. Opening the door while moving or failing to secure the vehicle can be an automatic unsafe-act failure.
Use the stated allowances
Straight-line backing allows one free pull-up and one free look. Reverse offset backing allows two free pull-ups and up to two looks. Forward offset tracking does not allow stopping, backing, or exiting during the exercise. An encroachment requires stopping when the examiner signals and returning within the boundaries.
Finish exactly as directed
Final position matters on the backing exercises. On completion, set the parking brake, select neutral or park, and sound the horn. Failure to finish within the required boundaries, failure to follow instructions, collision risk, uncontrolled movement, or another unsafe act can fail or terminate the test.
Commercial Driver License Exam Readiness: Achieving a passing grade of 80% or higher on state DMV commercial driver knowledge exams requires mastery of federal vehicle inspection procedures, gross vehicle weight ratings (GVWR / GCWR), braking mechanics, and road safety regulations.
