This commercial driver study guide covers relevant Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) concepts and Pennsylvania commercial driver knowledge topics. Review the regulations, procedures, and safety checklists below as part of your CDL and commercial learner permit (CLP) preparation.
Identify the installed system
Determine whether the test vehicle uses air, hydraulic, air-over-hydraulic, or another permitted system. Perform the applicable sequence rather than reciting controls that are not installed. Before releasing any brake, secure the vehicle as instructed and understand whether wheel chocks are required.
Air-brake sequence
Charge the system, test leakage using the correct single or combination limits, verify low-air warning activation before 55 psi, and confirm spring-brake or protection-valve response. Observe gauges, warning devices, controls, hoses, chambers, drums or rotors, and linings. Any failed automatic item ends safe progression.
Hydraulic-brake sequence
Check the warning indicator, pump and hold the pedal as directed, and identify abnormal sinking, softness, loss, or visible leakage. Verify assist or reserve behavior when applicable. A pedal that does not hold firm can indicate a leak or system failure; repeated pumping is not a repair.
Parking, trailer, and service checks
Test parking and trailer brakes against movement as instructed, then perform a low-speed service-brake check. The vehicle should stop promptly without pulling, unusual noise, delay, or weak response. A correct static check does not replace proving that the service brakes stop the actual vehicle evenly.
Commercial Driver License Exam Readiness: Achieving a passing grade of 80% or higher on state DMV commercial driver knowledge exams requires mastery of federal vehicle inspection procedures, gross vehicle weight ratings (GVWR / GCWR), braking mechanics, and road safety regulations.
