The school-bus danger zone extends around the bus, with the greatest concern immediately in front, behind, and along both sides. New York training uses a 15-foot safety area for students and mirror checks before every movement. The driver counts students, accounts for anyone who disappears from view, and never moves until every child is located.

Activate amber warning lights at least 300 feet before the stop when the system and situation require them, slow smoothly, check traffic, and stop in the correct position. The bus should stop so students do not need to hurry and so the driver controls the crossing rather than surprising following traffic.

Students who must cross are directed to walk far enough ahead of the bus to remain visible, commonly at least 10 feet, and then cross only on the driver's signal after the driver verifies traffic has stopped. The driver checks all mirrors and the roadway again before closing the door and moving.

Activate hazard warning lights about 200 feet before the crossing, stop between 15 and 50 feet from the nearest rail, open the service door and driver window as required, silence noise, look and listen in both directions, and cross in a gear that avoids shifting. Never proceed unless the bus can fully clear the tracks.

Evacuate when remaining aboard presents greater danger, such as fire, a dangerous position, or a hazardous-material threat. Secure the bus, notify dispatch or emergency services, select the safest exit, direct students to a protected assembly point, account for everyone, and do not allow students to return for belongings.
