New Jersey CDL New Jersey Commercial Learner Permit and Supervised Practice

The applicant first obtains the $125 commercial examination test receipt, identifies the intended vehicle and endorsements, and passes the required knowledge tests. The validated receipt, self-certification, and required electronic medical status are then used to obtain the CLP. The receipt itself is not the supervised-driving credential.

A New Jersey CLP is valid for 180 days. MVC states that knowledge-test scores are valid for 360 days, while score banking and several permit processes operate within the applicable 180-day CLP cycle. Expiration can require renewal, new fees, and additional testing even when an earlier result once passed.

Unless an authorized waiver applies, the CLP holder must wait at least 14 days after permit issuance before taking the CDL skills test. Completing ELDT, scheduling early, or having prior noncommercial experience does not shorten the federal minimum.

Public-road practice requires a person licensed for the class and endorsements of the CMV. The supervisor must occupy the front passenger seat, or the proper first-row position in a passenger vehicle, and must provide direct observation. The learner must remain within every restriction on the CLP.

A P or S learner may carry only the narrow group allowed for training and examination, not ordinary passengers. An N learner may practice only with an empty tank; a tank that previously carried hazardous material must be purged. These limits remain even when an employer owns the vehicle or directs the trip.
