This commercial driver study guide covers relevant Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) concepts and North Carolina commercial driver knowledge topics. Review the regulations, procedures, and safety checklists below as part of your CDL and commercial learner permit (CLP) preparation.
Endorsements
North Carolina uses T for doubles or triples, N for tank vehicles, H for hazardous materials, X for tank plus hazardous materials, P for passenger vehicles, and S for school buses. P and S require skills tests; T, N, H, and X are added through the required knowledge and security processes.
CLP endorsements
Only P, S, and N may be placed on a North Carolina CLP. P or S carries the P no-passengers restriction, and N carries the X no-cargo-in-tank restriction. A learner tank that previously contained hazardous material must be purged before operation.
Vehicle-created restrictions
Testing in an automatic vehicle creates E; without air brakes creates L; with air-over-hydraulic brakes creates Z; and a Class A combination that is not a tractor-semitrailer creates O. Passenger testing in smaller vehicle groups creates M or N.
Operating restrictions
K limits operation to intrastate commerce, V records a medical variance, P prohibits ordinary passengers in a learner bus, and X prohibits cargo in a learner tank. Read all printed restrictions before operating or accepting a dispatch.
Exam focus
Apply the rule to the exact North Carolina vehicle, credential, date, trip, test stage, and operating facts in the question. Current NCDMV pages and North Carolina law control when an older manual sentence conflicts with a newer official requirement.
Commercial Driver License Exam Readiness: Achieving a passing grade of 80% or higher on state DMV commercial driver knowledge exams requires mastery of federal vehicle inspection procedures, gross vehicle weight ratings (GVWR / GCWR), braking mechanics, and road safety regulations.
