A driver transporting hazardous material in a quantity requiring placards needs H, or X when the operation also requires a tank endorsement. The base CDL class is determined separately by vehicle configuration, weight, passenger design, and cargo.

A first-time H applicant completes HazMat theory ELDT through a registered provider before the state H knowledge test. The applicant must also satisfy lawful-status and TSA security threat assessment requirements.

Mississippi no longer performs HME fingerprint enrollment at local DPS CDL stations. Pre-enroll, schedule, and submit fingerprints and identity documents through TSA Universal Enrollment Services.

Mississippi recommends beginning HME renewal at least 60 days before CDL expiration. Enrollment can begin before taking the renewal knowledge test so TSA processing does not unnecessarily delay credential completion.

HazMat authority requires age 21. The current Mississippi fee page lists a $100 hazardous-materials charge, but TSA or enrollment charges and future state fee changes must be checked separately before payment.
