Missouri CDL Missouri Commercial Learner's Permit and Supervised Practice

After passing the required Missouri knowledge exams, the applicant takes the results and required documents to a participating license office and completes the CLP transaction. The current Missouri CLP term is 360 days and the permit is nonrenewable. Expiration requires new knowledge testing and a new permit rather than an automatic extension.

A first-time applicant, upgrade applicant, or person adding a privilege that requires skills testing must hold the issued CLP for at least 14 days before the skills test. If issued July 1, the first eligible test day is July 15. Scheduling may occur earlier, but the examination cannot be administered before eligibility.

Practice is allowed only while accompanied by a CDL holder whose license is valid for the vehicle being operated and who sits beside the learner, or reasonably near the learner in a bus. The permit holder must also carry the valid Missouri base driver license. Permit restrictions remain active throughout practice.

An out-of-state CLP cannot be converted into a Missouri CLP. A new Missouri resident transfers the base license, retakes applicable Missouri commercial knowledge tests, and obtains a Missouri CLP. A student who keeps domicile elsewhere may train and test in Missouri under the home-state credential rules, with results transmitted to the state of domicile.

S may appear on a Missouri CLP after required testing, but H, X, and T may not. Passenger or school-bus training occurs without ordinary passengers or students. ELDT must be electronically verifiable before the applicable skills test, and first-time H applicants must complete H theory before the HazMat knowledge test.

Separate the nationally shared operating rule from the Missouri transaction rule. On an exam or at an office, apply the exact class, endorsement, restriction, document, fee, date, medical status, vehicle, and testing condition stated in the current Missouri source.
