This commercial driver study guide covers relevant Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) concepts and Missouri commercial driver knowledge topics. Review the regulations, procedures, and safety checklists below as part of your CDL and commercial learner permit (CLP) preparation.
Required tests
The applicant takes general knowledge plus every test required by the intended class, brakes, and endorsements. The manual lists 50 questions for general knowledge, 25 for air brakes, 20 for combination vehicles, 30 for hazardous materials, and 20 each for doubles/triples, passenger, tank, and school bus. Each examination is passed at 80 percent.
English-only administration
Missouri commercial written testing is administered only in English, and a translator is not allowed. Reasonable disability accommodations may be requested through the Missouri State Highway Patrol, but an accommodation does not replace the statutory language rule or permit an interpreter to answer or translate the exam.
Knowledge result versus permit
Passing at a Highway Patrol examination station produces a result that must be taken to a license office. It does not by itself authorize operation. For the military skills-waiver path, written results must be no more than six months old when the CDL application is completed.
Current permit cost
The Missouri commercial page gives a typical $44 CLP total: $25 written examination fee, $10 permit transaction fee, and $9 office processing fee. The exact amount can change with additional testing or transaction circumstances, so the current official fee information controls over an older printed table.
Typical first CDL cost
For many first-time applicants who already hold a valid CLP, Missouri gives an approximate $83 total: $25 skills test fee, $40 license transaction for a three-to-six-year term, and $18 office processing. Term, endorsements, credited fees, and other conditions may change the total.
Exam focus
Separate the nationally shared operating rule from the Missouri transaction rule. On an exam or at an office, apply the exact class, endorsement, restriction, document, fee, date, medical status, vehicle, and testing condition stated in the current Missouri source.
Commercial Driver License Exam Readiness: Achieving a passing grade of 80% or higher on state DMV commercial driver knowledge exams requires mastery of federal vehicle inspection procedures, gross vehicle weight ratings (GVWR / GCWR), braking mechanics, and road safety regulations.
