Michigan CDL Michigan Vehicle Inspection Test Rules

The examiner identifies the vehicle areas and components to inspect. The applicant must point to or touch items, name them, describe their condition, and explain the safety purpose when required.

Michigan permits the Vehicle Inspection Memory Aid printed in Appendix C. It is a list of components, not a script of acceptable conditions or explanations.

Before leaving the seat, place the transmission in neutral or park as appropriate, set the parking brake, shut down or follow examiner direction, and use three points of contact.

An unsafe act, failure to maintain control, inability to complete required brake checks, or dangerous disregard of examiner direction can end the segment regardless of memorized items.
