Seasonal restricted CDL
Michigan offers a limited seasonal CDL for qualifying agribusiness employees operating Group B or C vehicles within 150 miles of the business. The driver must have held a license at least one year and have a clean preceding three-year record. The credential is applied for each calendar year and cannot be used for buses or school buses.
Season and limited HazMat
The applicant may choose 180 days from issuance or the published spring and fall seasonal periods. The limited credential permits only specified quantities and kinds of diesel fuel or fertilizer without H or X. It is not general placarded-HazMat authority.
Exemptions
Michigan and federal rules exempt or specially treat certain farm, emergency, military, recreational, and government operations. An exemption depends on the exact vehicle, ownership, purpose, distance, cargo, and route. A driver remains subject to ordinary licensing when any required fact is missing.
IRP boundary
IRP apportions registration for qualifying interstate power units and buses. Michigan generally requires it for a two-axle power unit above 26,000 pounds, a power unit with three or more axles regardless of weight, or a combination above 26,000 pounds. The apportioned plate and cab card do not pay fuel tax, grant operating authority, or authorize oversize weight.
IFTA boundary
Michigan IFTA covers qualified interstate motor carriers and quarterly fuel-use tax reporting. Returns are due on the last day of the month following each quarter, and qualifying records are retained for at least four years from the return due date or filing date, whichever is later. Michigan-only or lighter operations may fall outside IFTA even when another carrier rule applies.
Exam focus
Apply the rule to the exact Michigan vehicle, credential, age, applicant, cargo, passenger use, commerce category, date, test stage, and operating facts. Current Michigan Department of State pages control time-sensitive procedures; the current official manual controls tested safety content unless a newer official notice expressly changes it.
