Michigan CDL Transfer, Renewal, Correction, and Enhanced Credential

A new Michigan resident presents the valid out-of-state CDL, Michigan residency evidence, current acceptable citizenship or lawful permanent-resident proof, medical evidence, and self-certification. Michigan retests when the applicant upgrades, adds authority, removes a restriction, or retains H under current HazMat rules.

Michigan renewal requires vision screening. Ordinary CDL knowledge tests are not repeated solely for renewal unless the driver upgrades, removes a restriction, or adds a new endorsement. H is different: the HazMat knowledge test and current TSA eligibility are required when renewing that endorsement.

Michigan's current page states that an endorsement dropped within the last two years can be reapplied for without a new knowledge test, subject to the other current requirements. That exception does not waive TSA, medical, training, skills, group, identity, or eligibility duties that still apply.

Removing E, L, Z, O, passenger-group, or other performance-based restrictions can require a new CLP, waiting period, representative vehicle, and skills test. Changing to Michigan-only medical certification can require a corrected CDL displaying K. A duplicate does not prove a missing skill.

Michigan offers standard and enhanced CDL credentials. The enhanced card supports certain land and sea re-entry uses and has different replacement or correction fees, but it does not expand the CDL group, endorsements, medical authority, or operating permissions.

Apply the rule to the exact Michigan vehicle, credential, age, applicant, cargo, passenger use, commerce category, date, test stage, and operating facts. Current Michigan Department of State pages control time-sensitive procedures; the current official manual controls tested safety content unless a newer official notice expressly changes it.
