Michigan CDL Knowledge Tests, Fees, and Retest Rules

Michigan publishes 70 questions for Group A, including a separate 20-question combination-vehicle test; Group B and C use 50 General Knowledge questions. T, P, S, and N each use 20 questions, H uses 30, and Air Brakes uses 25. The applicant takes only the modules required for the intended authority.

Each Michigan CDL knowledge test requires at least 80 percent. The computer testing station allows one test per day from each testing category. A failed module must wait until another eligible day; passing a different category does not convert the failed score.

The air-brake knowledge test is required for authority to operate air-brake-equipped CMVs, but knowledge alone is not enough. The skills-test vehicle must also have the correct air-brake system. Otherwise the issued credential can restrict the driver from some or all air-brake vehicles.

Michigan lists separate charges for the CDL credential, group designation or endorsement, correction, enhanced credential, training, TSA screening, and third-party skills test. State pages currently list $5 for each ordinary endorsement and $10 for X; private skills-test prices are not set by MDOS and can vary.

The application uses four choices for instruction and practice, but that presentation is an internal learning design, not a claim that every secure Michigan test form uses the same screen layout. Official facts are the published module sizes, required subjects, and 80-percent standard.
