Endorsement codes
Michigan uses T for doubles or triples, P for passenger vehicles, N for tank vehicles, H for placarded hazardous materials, X for combined tank and HazMat authority, and S for school buses. Triple-trailer combinations are not permitted in Michigan even though the T knowledge test also covers triples. An endorsement adds specialized authority but never substitutes for the proper Group A, B, or C.
Learner restrictions
A Michigan CLP with passenger or school-bus authority carries a no-passengers restriction during ordinary practice. A tank learner is limited to an empty tank and a tank that previously carried hazardous material must be purged when required. The accompanying driver must hold the group and endorsements needed for the practice vehicle.
Brake restrictions
Air-brake authority depends on both the 25-question air-brake knowledge test and the equipment used for the skills test. Testing without air brakes can produce an L restriction, while air-over-hydraulic equipment can produce Z, no full-air-brake CMV. The test vehicle must demonstrate the braking authority needed for future work.
Transmission and coupling restrictions
Testing in an automatic CMV can create E, no manual transmission. A Group A test in a non-tractor combination or one without a qualifying fifth-wheel connection can create O, no tractor-trailer CMV. These restrictions reflect what the applicant demonstrated, not what the employer later assigns.
Passenger and medical restrictions
Testing in a smaller passenger vehicle may limit the group of passenger or school-bus vehicles the driver may operate. K limits commercial operation to Michigan, V records a medical variance, and learner-only codes limit passenger, school-bus, or tank activity. Read every code on the permit and license before operating.
Exam focus
Apply the rule to the exact Michigan vehicle, credential, age, applicant, cargo, passenger use, commerce category, date, test stage, and operating facts.
