Michigan's current manual lists straight-line backing, offset back/right, offset back/left, and alley dock. The examiner selects the exercise or exercises required for the test.
Encroachments
Touching or crossing a boundary line or cone with any portion of the vehicle is scored as an encroachment. Track the trailer, rear overhang, mirrors, and front swing.
Pull-ups
A forward correction after backing has begun is scored as a pull-up. Initial corrections may be unpenalized, but excessive pull-ups add errors; a safe correction is still better than an encroachment or loss of control.
Outside looks
Michigan allows up to two outside looks on most exercises and one on straight-line backing. Before exiting, stop, place the transmission safely, set the parking brake, and maintain three points of contact.
Final position
Finish within the required boundaries, alignment, and depth, secure the vehicle, and signal completion. An unsafe act can fail the segment independent of accumulated points.
