Inspect every coupling, dolly, shutoff valve, line, brake, light, and trailer before movement.

This commercial driver study guide covers relevant Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) concepts and California commercial driver knowledge topics. Review the regulations, procedures, and safety checklists below as part of your CDL and commercial learner permit (CLP) preparation.

Inspect every coupling

Check tractor fifth wheel, first-trailer kingpin and apron, pintle hook, drawbar eye, safety chains, dolly fifth wheel, rear-trailer kingpin, release arms, latches, mounting hardware, and all locking devices. No connection can be assumed sound because the adjacent one is correct.

Lines, valves, and cables

Trace service, emergency/supply, and electrical lines from tractor to the last trailer. Look for crossed lines, poor seals, leaks, rubbing, pinching, missing support, and insufficient turning slack. Confirm intermediate shutoffs are open and rear shutoffs are closed.

03

Converter dolly

Inspect tires, wheels, lug nuts, axle, suspension, brakes, lights, reflectors, frame, drawbar, pintle eye, safety chains, fifth wheel, and air tank. Confirm the dolly is not bent, cracked, loosely mounted, or carrying damaged lines.

Trailers and cargo

Inspect landing gear, frames, crossmembers, floors, doors, lights, reflective material, axles, brakes, wheels, tires, and cargo securement on every trailer. Rear units experience strong movement, so loose cargo or weak securement can worsen quickly.

Brake-system tests

Charge the full combination and perform leakage, warning, tractor-protection, emergency, and service-brake checks using the current limits and sequence. More connections create more leak points; do not accept slow buildup or excessive compressor cycling.

06

Walk the complete length

A tractor-focused inspection misses most of a doubles/triples combination. Use a fixed route and physically reach the dolly and last trailer. Mirror observations supplement but do not replace close inspection.

Scenario

All couplings are locked, but the rear trailer’s supply shutoff is open. Air escapes when the system is charged. The driver closes the final shutoff, repeats the leakage test, and confirms normal pressure before travel.

Commercial Driver License Exam Readiness: Achieving a passing grade of 80% or higher on state DMV commercial driver knowledge exams requires mastery of federal vehicle inspection procedures, gross vehicle weight ratings (GVWR / GCWR), braking mechanics, and road safety regulations.
