CDL Study Guide β€’ FMCSA ELDT Theory Preparation β€’ DMV Written Knowledge Exam
Inspect coupling, air and electrical lines, landing gear, trailer structure, and brakes.

This commercial driver study guide covers relevant Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) concepts and California commercial driver knowledge topics. Review the regulations, procedures, and safety checklists below as part of your CDL and commercial learner permit (CLP) preparation.

Coupling system

Inspect fifth-wheel mounting, platform, plate, jaws, kingpin, apron, release arm, safety latch, sliding locks, and frame. There must be no unauthorized gaps, cracks, missing hardware, or unlocked components.

Lines and electrical cable

Check glad hands, seals, hoses, supports, electrical plug, and cable. Lines need turning slack without dragging, pinching, rubbing, or contacting exhaust. Confirm trailer lights and ABS indicator behavior.

03

Landing gear

Verify legs are fully raised, crank handle secured, pads undamaged, and structure firmly mounted. During uncoupling, confirm the surface can support the loaded trailer.

Trailer condition

Inspect frame, crossmembers, floor, doors, header board, cargo securement, axles, suspension, wheels, tires, brakes, lights, reflectors, and required markings.

Brake tests

Charge both systems, check leakage, warning devices, tractor protection, trailer emergency response, and service braking using the current handbook sequence and limits.

06

After every coupling

A familiar trailer still requires a complete inspection. Changes in height, seals, damage, cargo, or prior uncoupling can create a new defect.

Scenario

The fifth wheel looks locked, but one sliding-fifth-wheel pin is not engaged. The driver resets the lock before travel; the coupling jaw alone does not secure the sliding assembly.

Commercial Driver License Exam Readiness: Achieving a passing grade of 80% or higher on state DMV commercial driver knowledge exams requires mastery of federal vehicle inspection procedures, gross vehicle weight ratings (GVWR / GCWR), braking mechanics, and road safety regulations.
