Every Indiana CLP or CDL holder self-certifies as non-excepted interstate, excepted interstate, non-excepted intrastate, or excepted intrastate. Interstate versus intrastate and excepted versus non-excepted are separate decisions based on the actual operation.

A driver in a category requiring medical qualification must be examined by a medical examiner listed on the National Registry of Certified Medical Examiners and must continue to satisfy the applicable physical-qualification standards and any variance conditions.

Under the current workflow, the medical examiner submits the examination result to the National Registry, and the information is transmitted electronically to Indiana. The driver should verify that the BMV record shows the expected certified status before commercial operation.

K limits commercial operation to intrastate commerce, V records a medical variance, and Indiana's Q restriction identifies an intrastate medical waiver. The restriction and supporting document must remain consistent with the driver's self-certification and actual trip.

Failure to maintain required medical qualification can cause loss or downgrade of commercial privileges. Driving a CMV after the record becomes medically unqualified can create separate enforcement and employment consequences.
