Indiana CDL Knowledge Tests, Fees, and Retest Rules

All applicants take General Knowledge and add Air Brakes, Combination Vehicles, Passenger, School Bus, Tank, Doubles/Triples, and Hazardous Materials tests when required by the intended vehicle and endorsement. Federal standards require at least 80 percent correct.

Indiana permits one attempt per knowledge-test category per business day. After a failure, the applicant may retry that category on the next business day; repeated same-day attempts are not allowed.

Indiana states that written-test results are valid for one year. A person who lets the qualification expire may have to repeat the applicable knowledge modules even if a later appointment or training record still exists.

Indiana's fee chart revised January 1, 2026 lists $35 for a CDL, $17 for a CLP, $19 to add or remove a CDL endorsement, $9 to amend or replace a credential, and a $6 late-renewal fee. Provider, TSA, medical, or testing charges can be separate.

Indiana's public material does not provide a complete current live question distribution for every module. The application's 50-, 25-, and 20-question sets are internal practice blueprints and do not claim to reproduce a live BMV exam form.

Apply the rule to the exact Indiana vehicle, credential, date, trip, test stage, and operating facts. A later live BMV or DOR instruction controls a transaction when it directly supersedes older procedural text; the official manual remains the primary safety and test-content source.
