Route planning
Identify required, preferred, restricted, or prohibited HazMat routes, tunnels, bridges, urban areas, and local rules before departure. Carry required permits and do not let consumer navigation override official routing.
Railroad crossings
Placarded vehicles and specified HazMat operations must follow special railroad-crossing rules and exceptions. Stop at the lawful position when required, look and listen, select a gear, and cross only with room to clear every track.
Parking and attendance
Some materials restrict parking near roads, occupied structures, bridges, tunnels, or gathering places and may require attendance. Choose approved locations, secure the vehicle, protect keys and documents, and conduct required checks.
Fueling and smoking
Shut down and control ignition sources as required. Someone must attend fueling operations where rules require it. Prohibit smoking around specified classes and loading/fueling areas, and maintain bonding or grounding when applicable.
Tires and heat
Inspect tires at required intervals for specified materials and respond to overheating promptly. A hot tire or brake near flammable, explosive, or reactive cargo can become an ignition source. Do not continue until the danger is controlled.
Changing conditions
Closures, weather, security events, or parking unavailability may invalidate the plan. Stop safely and obtain authorized routing or carrier direction rather than improvising through a prohibited area.
Scenario
Construction closes the permitted tunnel bypass. The driver parks at an approved safe location and contacts dispatch for an authorized alternate instead of following a passenger-car detour.
