CDL Study Guide β€’ FMCSA ELDT Theory Preparation β€’ DMV Written Knowledge Exam
Read shipping papers, proper descriptions, identification numbers, labels, markings, placards, and emergency information.

This commercial driver study guide covers relevant Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) concepts and California commercial driver knowledge topics. Review the regulations, procedures, and safety checklists below as part of your CDL and commercial learner permit (CLP) preparation.

01

Shipping description

A basic description uses the required sequence of identification number, proper shipping name, hazard class/division, and packing group when assigned, plus required additional information. Copy and verify the official entry; do not shorten or reorder it casually.

Papers and emergency information

Shipping papers identify material and quantity, while emergency-response information describes hazards, protective actions, fire/spill response, and first aid. Both must be accessible and correspond to the actual shipment.

03

Package markings and labels

Markings can show proper name, identification number, orientation, specification, or handling information. Labels identify primary and subsidiary package hazards. They must be correct, legible, durable, unobscured, and placed as required.

Placards

Placards communicate vehicle-level hazards to the public and responders. Selection depends on material, class, quantity, packaging, and table rules. Display them on required sides, upright, visible, and free from attachments or dirt that reduce meaning.

05

Do not mix the layers

A label is generally package-level; a placard is vehicle-level; a marking is not automatically either. Shipping papers contain detailed identity. One layer does not cure an error in another.

Mismatch response

If papers, packages, labels, markings, or placards disagree, stop loading or movement and obtain qualified correction. Do not choose the symbol that β€œlooks closest.” Incorrect communication can direct responders toward a dangerous action.

Scenario

Papers describe a corrosive material but the package label shows a different primary hazard and no explanation. The driver holds the shipment for shipper review rather than changing the placard from memory.

Commercial Driver License Exam Readiness: Achieving a passing grade of 80% or higher on state DMV commercial driver knowledge exams requires mastery of federal vehicle inspection procedures, gross vehicle weight ratings (GVWR / GCWR), braking mechanics, and road safety regulations.
