This commercial driver study guide covers relevant Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) concepts and Georgia commercial driver knowledge topics. Review the regulations, procedures, and safety checklists below as part of your CDL and commercial learner permit (CLP) preparation.
Four categories
Georgia labels the categories A non-excepted interstate, B non-excepted intrastate, C excepted interstate, and D excepted intrastate. If any operation is interstate, classify the operation as interstate; if both excepted and non-excepted operation occur, choose non-excepted.
Electronic submission
Beginning June 18, 2025, the National Registry medical examiner submits the medical result to FMCSA and FMCSA transmits it electronically to Georgia DDS. DDS no longer accepts a new hard-copy certificate by mail, fax, upload, email, or counter service.
Timing and status
DDS advises allowing 48 business hours after the examination before checking the record. A medical certificate already on file remains valid until its expiration, but a driver who lets required certification or variance documentation lapse can become not-certified and lose commercial privileges.
Changing self-certification
A driver who changes commerce status must visit a DDS Customer Service Center. The change may add or remove K or V restrictions and may require issuance of a replacement license.
Exam focus
Apply the rule to the exact Georgia vehicle, credential, date, trip, test stage, and operating facts in the question. Current Georgia DDS rules and notices control when an older handbook sentence conflicts with a newer official requirement.
Commercial Driver License Exam Readiness: Achieving a passing grade of 80% or higher on state DMV commercial driver knowledge exams requires mastery of federal vehicle inspection procedures, gross vehicle weight ratings (GVWR / GCWR), braking mechanics, and road safety regulations.
