CDL Study Guide • FMCSA ELDT Theory Preparation • DMV Written Knowledge Exam
Inspect fluids, belts, hoses, leaks, steering components, frame, suspension, brakes, wheels, and tires.

This commercial driver study guide covers relevant Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) concepts and California commercial driver knowledge topics. Review the regulations, procedures, and safety checklists below as part of your CDL and commercial learner permit (CLP) preparation.

Open safely

Secure the vehicle, shut down when required, use hood supports, and keep clear of belts, fans, hot surfaces, batteries, and pressurized systems. Never open a hot cooling system or reach near moving parts.

Fluids and leaks

Identify engine oil, coolant, power steering, washer fluid, and other applicable reservoirs. Check level by approved method and inspect beneath the vehicle for fuel, oil, coolant, hydraulic, or other leaks.

03

Belts and hoses

Check belts for tension, cuts, glazing, fraying, and correct routing. Check hoses and lines for cracking, swelling, rubbing, leakage, and secure connections. Explain which component each belt or hose serves.

Steering system

Inspect steering box or rack, hoses, linkage, pitman arm, drag link, steering arm, tie rod, joints, cotter pins, and mounting. Look for looseness, damage, missing hardware, leakage, and unauthorized repair.

Steer axle

Inspect springs or air bags, mounts, shocks, U-bolts, axle, brake components, wheel, hub, fasteners, rim, valve stem, and tire. Steering tires require especially careful damage and tread inspection.

06

Explain function and defect

Name the component, explain its job, then describe the unsafe condition. “Secure and not leaking” is useful only where it applies; tires, belts, steering joints, and brake parts need their specific criteria.

Scenario

Black soot surrounds an exhaust joint near the cab. The applicant identifies a possible exhaust leak and explains the risk of fumes entering the occupied compartment.

Commercial Driver License Exam Readiness: Achieving a passing grade of 80% or higher on state DMV commercial driver knowledge exams requires mastery of federal vehicle inspection procedures, gross vehicle weight ratings (GVWR / GCWR), braking mechanics, and road safety regulations.
