This commercial driver study guide covers relevant Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) concepts and California commercial driver knowledge topics. Review the regulations, procedures, and safety checklists below as part of your CDL and commercial learner permit (CLP) preparation.
Visualize the path
The vehicle begins in one lane and must move forward into an adjacent offset lane. Identify entry, transition, and final boundaries. Plan where the front moves and how rear wheels offtrack.
Create turning room
Move far enough within the starting area to create a smooth diagonal path without striking the outside boundary. Turning too early increases rear-wheel encroachment; too late leaves insufficient room to straighten.
Track the rear
Use mirrors through the turn to watch rear wheels and vehicle sides. The front clearing a cone does not mean the rear is clear. Account for tail swing on the opposite side.
Straighten in the target lane
Begin unwinding steering before the vehicle reaches the final centerline. Make small corrections and finish parallel within the designated lane and stop zone.
Control speed
Use a walking pace. Fast movement shortens the time available to read mirrors and amplifies steering errors. Avoid stopping with wheels sharply turned if a smooth correction remains possible.
Offtracking is the main trap
The inside rear wheel follows a tighter path than the front. Protecting only the front outside corner can cause an inside encroachment.
Scenario
The front enters the offset lane cleanly, but the inside rear tire approaches a cone. The applicant slows, reduces steering angle, and lets the rear clear before completing alignment.
Commercial Driver License Exam Readiness: Achieving a passing grade of 80% or higher on state DMV commercial driver knowledge exams requires mastery of federal vehicle inspection procedures, gross vehicle weight ratings (GVWR / GCWR), braking mechanics, and road safety regulations.
