Florida CDL Fees, Documents, Exemptions, and Final Checklist

The Florida handbook lists $75 for a standard original or renewed CDL, $7 for each endorsement, $10 for a written re-examination, and $20 for a driving re-examination. It lists a $48 initial or renewal fee for qualifying customers who completed school-bus training and are applying for or employed by a public or non-public school system. Local tax collector service charges and federal or vendor charges—especially the HazMat security process—may be separate. The app should therefore show handbook amounts with their source date and link to the current official fee schedule before payment.

A practical checklist includes acceptable proof of identity and lawful presence, Social Security number evidence, Florida residential-address documents, the current Florida Class E license, every other license to surrender, and medical certification or variance documents when required. Bring the correct class of vehicle and proof required by the testing provider for the skills test. Requirements can differ between an original, renewal, transfer, upgrade, replacement, or endorsement transaction, so the service type should be selected before assembling the file.

The handbook describes exemptions for qualifying military vehicles, authorized emergency vehicles, qualifying farm operations, recreational vehicles, and certain straight trucks used only to transport the driver's own tangible personal property that is not for sale. Each exemption has conditions. For example, the farm provision is not a blanket exemption for every agricultural load or employee, and an RV used in a commercial passenger or freight operation cannot be assumed exempt merely because it resembles a recreational vehicle.

Before operating, answer five questions: Does the vehicle or use require a CDL? Is the class correct from GVWR/GCWR and towing configuration? Are all required endorsements present? Do any restrictions prohibit this transmission, brake system, passenger class, tractor-trailer configuration, interstate route, or cargo? Is the license and required medical status current? A correct answer to only the class question is not enough; legal operation depends on the entire credential and the actual trip.
