CDL Study Guide β€’ FMCSA ELDT Theory Preparation β€’ DMV Written Knowledge Exam
Choose whether to evacuate, select exits, assign helpers, account for students, and move to safety.

This commercial driver study guide covers relevant Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) concepts and California commercial driver knowledge topics. Review the regulations, procedures, and safety checklists below as part of your CDL and commercial learner permit (CLP) preparation.

01

When evacuation is safer

Evacuate for fire or smoke, dangerous leaks, unstable vehicle position, threat of collision, railroad-track danger, or another immediate hazard. If outside conditions are worse, sheltering aboard may be safer. Decide based on the actual hazard, not habit.

Choose exits

Use front, rear, side, roof, or window exits according to vehicle design and hazard location. Direct students away from fire, traffic, water, wires, unstable slopes, or hazardous material. Never send them through the danger when another usable exit exists.

Assign helpers

Choose mature, able students or adults to assist at exits and lead students to the assembly area. Give brief, specific commands. Helpers support the driver but do not take responsibility for deciding the route or accounting for everyone.

Students needing assistance

Know the evacuation plan for mobility, medical, sensory, or behavioral needs before an emergency. Use required evacuation equipment and trained procedures. Do not block the main flow while improvising with wheelchairs or securement devices.

Assembly and count

Move students to a safe location well away from the bus and roadway, preferably upwind and uphill from fire or leaks. Keep them together, take attendance, report missing students, and prevent anyone from returning.

06

Practice without creating danger

Conduct drills under approved procedures, inspect exits afterward, and teach students how to listen, leave belongings, sit-and-slide where required, and move to the assembly area. Drills must not expose students to traffic or fall hazards.

Scenario

Smoke appears at the engine front. The driver stops, secures, calls for help, and directs students through the rear and safe-side exits to an upwind assembly point. Helpers lead the group while the driver checks the bus only as safety permits.

Commercial Driver License Exam Readiness: Achieving a passing grade of 80% or higher on state DMV commercial driver knowledge exams requires mastery of federal vehicle inspection procedures, gross vehicle weight ratings (GVWR / GCWR), braking mechanics, and road safety regulations.
