Control rollover, steering, following space, turns, backing, and trailer tracking.

This commercial driver study guide covers relevant Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) concepts and California commercial driver knowledge topics. Review the regulations, procedures, and safety checklists below as part of your CDL and commercial learner permit (CLP) preparation.

Rollover and steering

Combination vehicles have a high rollover risk when speed, load height, or steering demand is excessive. Slow before curves and ramps, steer smoothly, and keep cargo low and centered. Rearward amplification can make the last trailer move more sharply than the tractor.

02

Following and stopping

A longer, heavier vehicle needs more room for air-brake lag, braking, traffic changes, and escape options. Increase following distance and begin slowing early. Empty trailers can have poor traction and may bounce or lock wheels more easily.

Turns and offtracking

Trailer wheels follow a shorter inside path than the tractor. Set up wide enough to protect curbs and road users without swinging into another lane. Watch the right mirror through right turns and account for trailer tail swing.

Backing

Avoid backing when practical. Use GOAL, prefer driver-side backing, move at walking speed, and make pull-ups before alignment is lost. The tractor steers the trailer in the opposite initial direction; small corrections prevent rapid jackknife angles.

Lane changes

Signal early, locate traffic around both tractor and trailer, and move gradually. Do not return until the entire trailer clears. A headlight flash is not proof of clearance; verify in mirrors and maintain space for trailer tracking.

06

Exam distinction

The tractor path is not the trailer path. Offtracking affects the inside of turns, while tail swing affects the outside rear. Rollover prevention begins with speed before the maneuver, not a sudden correction after the trailer leans.

Scenario

A loaded combination approaches a tight ramp. The driver completes braking while straight, enters below the advisory speed as conditions require, and holds a smooth path. Accelerating into the curve or braking hard after lean begins would increase rollover risk.

Commercial Driver License Exam Readiness: Achieving a passing grade of 80% or higher on state DMV commercial driver knowledge exams requires mastery of federal vehicle inspection procedures, gross vehicle weight ratings (GVWR / GCWR), braking mechanics, and road safety regulations.
