Build and separate multiple-trailer combinations in the correct order without losing control of a trailer or dolly.

This commercial driver study guide covers relevant Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) concepts and California commercial driver knowledge topics. Review the regulations, procedures, and safety checklists below as part of your CDL and commercial learner permit (CLP) preparation.

Plan the combination

Place the heaviest semitrailer directly behind the tractor and the lighter trailer at the rear when the configuration and rules require. Work on firm, level ground, inspect the path, secure each unit, and keep bystanders clear. Never improvise the order from memory when company or vehicle procedures are available.

Secure the converter dolly

Position the dolly in front of the rear trailer, align it without standing between moving units, and use approved handling methods. Connect the dolly drawbar eye to the first trailer’s pintle hook, close and secure the latch, attach safety chains, and verify the dolly wheels and fifth wheel remain controlled.

Couple the rear trailer

Set the rear trailer to the correct height, back the dolly under it slowly, confirm the fifth wheel locks around the kingpin shank, visually inspect for no gap, and perform the proper tug test. Connect air and electrical lines and raise landing gear fully.

04

Air and valve sequence

Connect lines without crossing them, open the shutoff valves needed to charge the following unit, and close the valves at the rear of the last trailer. Charge the system, check for leaks, and confirm that every trailer brake releases and applies correctly.

Uncouple in a controlled order

Park on firm ground, secure every unit, lower landing gear, close required valves, disconnect and secure lines, release the correct coupling, and move only after confirming the remaining units cannot roll or fall. Pulling the tractor away before supporting the trailer can drop the load.

06

Common traps

A tug test never replaces visual inspection. Safety chains do not replace a locked pintle hook. An open rear shutoff valve causes major air loss. A high trailer can false-couple above the jaws. Treat each connection as a separate coupling that must pass its own check.

Scenario

The rear trailer appears coupled, but a flashlight inspection shows a gap above the dolly fifth wheel. The driver lowers and resets the trailer height, uncouples, and repeats the complete sequence instead of relying on the tug test.

Commercial Driver License Exam Readiness: Achieving a passing grade of 80% or higher on state DMV commercial driver knowledge exams requires mastery of federal vehicle inspection procedures, gross vehicle weight ratings (GVWR / GCWR), braking mechanics, and road safety regulations.
