Dolly purpose and parts
A converter dolly gives the following semitrailer a fifth-wheel connection. Key parts include the drawbar and eye, pintle-hook connection, safety chains, fifth wheel, release mechanism, axle, suspension, brakes, air tank, lights, and electrical/air connections.
Pintle hook and chains
The pintle hook must close and lock around the drawbar eye. Safety chains must be crossed or attached as required to approved points with enough slack for turning but not dragging. Chains are secondary protection, not permission to use a damaged latch.
Air flows to the rear
Supply air charges dolly and rear-trailer tanks; service pressure commands braking. Follow line routing through each unit and set shutoff valves so air reaches all connected equipment but cannot escape from the final rear outlets.
Handling an unsecured dolly
A dolly can roll, pivot, or crush a person. Use approved positioning equipment, secure it before working between units, keep hands and feet away from pinch points, and never attempt to stop a moving dolly by hand.
Dolly fifth-wheel check
Set rear-trailer height correctly, verify jaws around the kingpin shank, no gap at the apron, locked release arm, and a successful tug test. Inspect mounting and lubrication condition according to vehicle procedure.
Exam distinction
Open intermediate shutoffs allow air to continue rearward. Closed shutoffs at the last trailer seal the system. Reversing this pattern prevents charging or creates an open leak.
Scenario
The rear trailer brakes will not release. The driver finds an intermediate supply shutoff closed, opens it after verifying connections, charges the system, and repeats brake and leakage checks.
