Fifth-wheel mounting
Inspect frame brackets, platform, mounting bolts, welds, fifth-wheel plate, pivot pins, release arm, safety latch, sliding rails, and locking pins. Every sliding pin must engage and no unauthorized movement or damage may exist.
Kingpin and apron
Inspect kingpin for damage and proper engagement, trailer apron for cracks or bends, and full contact with the fifth wheel. A visible gap can indicate incorrect trailer height or false coupling.
Locking jaws
Use a safe lighted view to confirm jaws are closed around the kingpin shank, not the head. Verify release-arm lock and safety latch, then perform the proper tug test. Visual and physical checks support each other.
Air and electrical connections
Check glad hands, seals, hoses, supports, electrical plug, cable, and trailer ABS connection. Lines need enough slack for turns without dragging, rubbing, pinching, or contacting exhaust.
Landing gear and trailer
Verify landing gear is fully raised, handle secured, and structure undamaged. Inspect trailer frame, crossmembers, floor, sides, doors, axles, brakes, wheels, tires, lights, and cargo.
Combination brake functions
Check trailer air charging, leakage, tractor protection, trailer emergency braking, and service response using the current sequence. A correct mechanical coupling does not prove air-brake connections are correct.
Scenario
The jaws are correctly locked, but one sliding fifth-wheel pin remains retracted. The applicant identifies an unsafe sliding assembly and does not rely on the kingpin connection alone.
