CDL Study Guide β€’ FMCSA ELDT Theory Preparation β€’ DMV Written Knowledge Exam
Understand trailer air supply, service lines, protection valves, and pressure-loss response.

This commercial driver study guide covers relevant Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) concepts and California commercial driver knowledge topics. Review the regulations, procedures, and safety checklists below as part of your CDL and commercial learner permit (CLP) preparation.

01

Two trailer lines

The service line carries control pressure for trailer service brakes. The emergency or supply line fills trailer tanks and controls emergency functions. Color and connector conventions help, but always identify actual vehicle controls and line routing.

Glad hands and seals

Connect matching glad hands with clean, undamaged rubber seals. Crossed lines can prevent correct braking or release. Secure lines with enough slack for turns but away from rubbing, pinching, heat, and the catwalk.

Trailer air supply control

The trailer air-supply control sends air to release trailer spring brakes and charge tanks. Pulling it out shuts supply and applies trailer emergency brakes. Never use the trailer hand valve or supply control as a parking substitute.

04

Tractor protection valve

The tractor protection system closes when trailer air is lost or the supply control is activated, helping preserve tractor air. Test its operation using the current handbook sequence; a valve that fails its pressure test requires repair.

Trailer hand valve

The hand valve applies trailer service brakes only. Use it for the limited inspection purpose described in the handbook, not for driving, parking, or preventing rollback. Overuse can skid the trailer or create a jackknife.

Air-loss clues

A warning, falling gauges, continuous compressor operation, weak response, or trailer supply control popping out may indicate air loss. Stop safely before pressure becomes inadequate or spring brakes apply.

Scenario

After coupling, the trailer tanks will not charge and spring brakes remain applied. The driver checks line matching, glad-hand seals, supply control, valves, and leaks rather than dragging the trailer.

Commercial Driver License Exam Readiness: Achieving a passing grade of 80% or higher on state DMV commercial driver knowledge exams requires mastery of federal vehicle inspection procedures, gross vehicle weight ratings (GVWR / GCWR), braking mechanics, and road safety regulations.
