CDL Study Guide β€’ FMCSA ELDT Theory Preparation β€’ DMV Written Knowledge Exam
Use tractor and trailer ABS indicators and braking technique correctly.

This commercial driver study guide covers relevant Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) concepts and California commercial driver knowledge topics. Review the regulations, procedures, and safety checklists below as part of your CDL and commercial learner permit (CLP) preparation.

01

Separate ABS systems

The tractor and trailer may each have ABS and separate warning lamps. ABS-equipped trailers can be towed by older tractors and vice versa, but only equipped units receive their own wheel-lock protection.

Lamp behavior

Observe each lamp during startup and coupling checks. A lamp that remains on indicates a fault. Identify whether it belongs to tractor or trailer and report it; do not assume one working system protects every axle.

Emergency braking

Apply firm controlled pressure and steer toward the safe path. Do not pump solely because ABS cycles. Watch trailer position because ABS reduces wheel lock but cannot prevent every jackknife or rollover.

Traction limits

ABS cannot create grip or compensate for excess speed, poor tires, bad brakes, or high cargo. Maintain following space and reduce speed before curves and slippery areas.

05

Without functioning ABS

Foundation brakes may still operate when the ABS lamp shows a fault, but anti-lock protection may be unavailable. Follow inspection, repair, and out-of-service requirements.

06

Exam distinction

ABS helps preserve steering during hard braking; it does not guarantee the shortest stop. Tractor ABS and trailer ABS are related but independent systems.

Scenario

The tractor lamp clears but the trailer lamp remains on. The driver reports a trailer ABS fault and drives only as permitted, without assuming tractor ABS covers the trailer.

Commercial Driver License Exam Readiness: Achieving a passing grade of 80% or higher on state DMV commercial driver knowledge exams requires mastery of federal vehicle inspection procedures, gross vehicle weight ratings (GVWR / GCWR), braking mechanics, and road safety regulations.
